Hello all,

I've just finished my first year at University and am trying to find some work experience, even if unpaid, to keep me occupied during these enormously long holidays! I've emailed/phoned various places but no luck...any ideas of whom I should target?

Thanks

In a very similar position, I've just finished my second year and would happily do some unpaid work experience (provided it was useful). Wish I'd sorted myself something out earlier on now. My advice to you is next year make sure you start looking around christmas/new year and you have a much better chance of getting something worthwhile. For the moment though all I can say is keep trying.

Yeah i've tried so many places! I think for next summer i'm definately going to try and get an internship so will start applying as early as possible. Thanks, will keep at it, good luck to you

Mercer is a really good place to apply for an internship though they do expect penultimate year applicants. I know people that did work at HSBC over their first year holdays, that could be a good place to look.

It's a bit too late now but the GES summer internship programme is a great step towards a career in the GES. Also you could try to contact individual departments outside of London as they also run their own internship schemes (for example, DCSF).

What do you study? Where are you and can it be done online?

It really depends which country you are all in. If any of you are in the UK you may want to try places like the Adam Smith Institute - http://www.adamsmith.org/jobs-%40-asi/ or similar places... I've heard people do internships at the Bank of England.

Hope this helps,

Krishna
